Why firewood demand is rising
Europe is entering the 2026–27 heating season with gas storage well below its usual level. In late October, EU storage was reported at around three-quarters full, against the customary target of 90% by 1 November, and the Dutch TTF gas benchmark traded at its highest level since late 2022. For households and businesses that own a stove or fireplace, wood is the most practical way to cut gas use or keep a back-up heat source.
For importers, wholesalers and retail chains, that means the same thing every tight winter brings: demand arrives quickly, and the stock you have not booked by November is hard to find in January.
Decide on the pack before the price
Retail buyers sell firewood by the pack, not by the tonne. Settle these points first, because they drive cost, container fill and shelf price:
- Pack weight. 10 kg cartons or sacks suit DIY, garden centres and convenience retail. Larger sacks or loose bulk suit distributors who repack locally.
- Pack format. Cartons stack and display well; sacks are lighter and cheaper to ship.
- Branding. Supplier-branded or your own private label, and which languages the pack must carry.
- Palletisation and container fill. Ask how many packs fit a pallet and a container, so you can compare offers per pack delivered.
Ask about moisture and size
Dry wood burns hotter and cleaner. Several European markets set or recommend moisture limits for firewood sold for domestic burning, often around 20%. Ask the supplier for the moisture content and piece length of the lot you are buying, and check whether your market has its own rules.
Plan the import paperwork early
Raw firewood is a regulated plant product in the EU, and from 30 December 2026 wood products, including fuel wood, come under the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Both affect what documents must be ready before the goods reach the border. Our EU import guide for charcoal and firewood explains the main points.

Clear answers. Better decisions.
Why is firewood demand higher in Europe this winter?
EU gas storage entered the 2026–27 season well below the usual 90% target and wholesale gas prices reached their highest level since 2022, so more buyers are using wood heating to reduce gas use or as a back-up.
