Lump charcoal, not briquettes

Natural lump charcoal is wood carbonised in its natural shape. It contains no binders, which is why many barbecue and shisha users prefer it to pressed briquettes. Egypt exports two well-known types: Casuarina, known locally as Gazourin, and orange wood from citrus trees.

Casuarina (Gazourin) charcoal

Casuarina is a dense wood, and its charcoal comes as irregular pieces with a naturally carbonised texture. It is widely used for grills, restaurants and shisha. View Casuarina charcoal.

Orange wood charcoal

Orange wood charcoal is made from citrus branches and keeps their branch shape after carbonisation. Buyers who market a natural fruit-wood charcoal often choose it. View orange wood charcoal.

What to specify in your enquiry

• Use. Barbecue, restaurant grilling or shisha — this decides the piece size.
• Piece size. Larger pieces for grills; smaller graded pieces for shisha. Ask how fines and dust are limited.
• Pack. Weight, carton or sack, and branding: APEX ChemTrade, MTI or your private label.
• Test report. Ask for the lab report for the lot. Performance figures such as ash, moisture and fixed carbon depend on the lot.
• Destination. Country, port and any market standards your retailers require, such as EN 1860-2 in Europe.

Comparing offers fairly

Compare price per delivered pack or per tonne on the same Incoterm, with the same piece size and the same documents. A low price for unspecified sizing often means more dust and fines on arrival.
